Lying behind the
imposing walls of the Brighton General Cemetery, is a remarkable story of
struggle and dominance over 150 years. Weathered and worn, the walls
have stood symbolically like a fortress to a city, foreboding yet silent,
providing protection from controversy that has affected other cemetery
trusts.
The history is more than
just the story within the walls. It is one entwined with the settlement and
development of the district, the religious bodies who elected the Trustees,
with the monumental masons and undertakers who plied their trade, the
different levels of government, and with other cemeteries in the area.
Until now, the story has
largely remained untold, hidden away like a dark secret too troubling to be
revealed. It is indeed a remarkable story. |
